Great post thanks. I like the way you name stocks not just make general statements. ReplyStocks Covered by The Energy Stock Blog [view article]
ABP synbol has been changed to AXAS. I tried changing the symbol, but it doesn't recognize the new symbol. I enjoy reading Alpha Stock Alerts. Thank you. ReplyInvestment Ideas With Potential From the One-House Grid [view article]
Excellent article. The problem you have revealed is from the law of unintended consequences.
When the the rich move to the one-house grid, you orphan the legacy utility system to the poor. This cause their rates to increase because for every one-house grid there is not an equal reduction in operating and capital costs for the existing utility, therefore the the disadvantaged electric bills will spike. There is no way a wealthy homeowner can zero their bill through net metering and this reduction in revenue to the utilities will not effect everybody else left behind.
Detrimental cause and effect... Reply

I switched to SogoTrade, www.sogotrade.com/Defa..., and have saved many $$$ in commissions over Ameritrade.SogoTrade Premier account commissions are $1.50 per trade with unlimited trades and only a $10 monthly fee. Also, trade executions are much faster than Ameritrade. No mutual fund or options trading which I don't do anyway. Good luck. Reply

EXCELLENT article, TomLet me add that part of demand response (probably a large part) will occur automatically. For example, smart technology will be built that will actively monitor the customer's peak demand 24/7. When the system "sees" approaching excessive peak demand, it will preclude the fridge compressor or AC compressor from cycling on. Ten minutes later, when peak demand has dropped a bit, one of these appliances will be allowed to come on.
By dynamically monitoring house loads, the house's demand "profile" will be smoothed. This will be paid for by TOU (time-of-use) metering--the house will be charged, say, 20 cents per KWH when it uses KWH during peak demand times, but only 10 cents per KWH during lower-demand periods.
TOU metering will incentivize demand-response solutions on a house-by-house, customer-by-customer basis.

suggestions: use dual metering (i.e. your water heater & hot tub (spa) on one meter circuit (these are things where thermal storage is built in) & your room lighting & other essentials on the normal meter circuit. dominion virginia power did this on a consumer-test basis in 1994 but discontinued the experiment. if you insist on using your water heater/hot tub during peak demand hours you get to pay a higher rate per kwh for the units on that circuit. you get an indicator light on your control panel to notify you that you are in the peak zone.nuclear utilities - nukes like to operate base load & not have cycling loads imposed. pump water storage, a means of peak shaving which is in use in various places where geography is suitable. electrolysis/hydrogen storage, you can use nighttime low-load demand power to make h2 which you burn off in a combustion turbine/combined cycle unit the next day. run your H2 powered vehicle with it too if you have one.

Very good summary and a realistic look at the sector, thanks ReplyNew Wind ETF Cools Off Sunburned Portfolios [view article]
Another author, today, commented on the poorly constructed & uncorrelated 'Timber" ETFs, CUT & WOOD, which have the same shortcomings as the ones mentioned in this article.I suggested, in a comment that timber-investors pick and choose real timber investments, vs. land, debt holders and paper mills... and thereby make their own ETF section of a portfolio with individual securities. The author has done the same for this particular "green sector" of alternative energy. Reply

Thanks, Tom, you make some good points. As it happens, I do have just about $20k to invest in Alternative Energy, but if I implemented your strategy, I'd have a lot of trading costs, at $9 per pick. That hardly beats managed-fund expense, especially if I have to revise some of the picks.
My other concern is the liquidity/spread of the .PK issues. Can you comment on this? I especially like Sharp and New Flier.
