- Thursday 1:43 PM Nvidia (NVDA) announces its first 4G LTE baseband chip, the fruits of its 2011 acquisition of Icera, has been qualified for use on tablets running on AT&T's (T) LTE network. The product faces tough competition from Qualcomm (QCOM), whose baseband chips are used in 4G iPad models. A chip combining an Icera baseband with an Nvidia Tegra app processor is due in 2013. [Tech]
- Tuesday 2:10 PM The Street is pricing Qualcomm (QCOM +1.2%) as if its business model is broken, says Bernstein's Stacy Rasgon. At a sub-$60 stock price, he thinks investors are pricing in a major decline in Qualcomm's royalty payments, either due to a lower rate or declining 3G/4G phone prices, and/or a drop in its chip margins. Rasgon, who has a $75 PT on Qualcomm, doesn't see either scenario as likely. (earlier) [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday 10:36 AM Preferential treatment from TSMC (TSM) or not, Qualcomm's (QCOM) 28nm baseband chip shortage is leading the likes of Samsung (SSNLF.PK), LG (LGEAF.PK), and HTC to worry they won't be able to meet 4G phone demand. While 4G devices make up only a small percentage of global phone sales, they account for a much larger chunk of high-end sales. And shipments are expected to surge in 2H thanks to the Samsung Galaxy S III and next-gen iPhone. (previous) [Tech]
- Monday 10:45 AM Piper's Gene Munster declares there's an 80% chance Apple (AAPL +3.4%) will hit his sales forecasts for the next-gen iPhone, in spite of Qualcomm's (QCOM) 28nm chip supply issues. In typical form, Munster adds the next iPhone will trigger the biggest "upgrade cycle in smartphone history." Meanwhile, Jefferies' Peter Misek predicts Apple will lower the unsubsidized price of the iPhone 3GS to $250-$300, to help it better compete with Android in emerging markets.
