11:01 AM After bouncing a little yesterday, Facebook (FB -3.7%) is selling off again after Capstone Investments started coverage with a Hold, citing concerns about its valuation and the performance of its premium ads. It was reported yesterday Facebook, whose ad sales efforts have come under fire, will allow advertisers to buy premium ads via its site, or through third parties. This is likely to boost demand, but could come at the cost of lower ad rates. Zynga (ZNGA -4.4%) is also lower.
Comment![Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday 2:58 PM Zynga (ZNGA -1.8%) plans to announce an advertising deal with DreamWorks (DWA +2.1%) later today, according to CNBC. All eyes will be on Draw Something to see if the game lands a chunk of the ad revenue after costing the company a pretty penny to acquire. [Tech]
- Wednesday 2:19 PM The Angry Birds are flying into Facebook. Angry Birds Friends, the first Facebook (FB) offering for Rovio's absurdly popular franchise, is out of beta and filled to the brim with "social" features such as tournaments. The game, which features in-app purchases, is good news for Facebook Credits, but not for Zynga (ZNGA), which has seen daily users fall for a number of hit games as competition grows. [Tech]
- Tuesday 5:09 PM In an interview with FierceMobile, Zynga (ZNGA) mobile VP Travis Boatman says his company is focused on maintaining a "freemium" model for its games, while occasionally charging for ad removal and other features. He also suggests Zynga is open to developing for Windows Phone (MSFT, NOK), but doesn't provide any firm commitments. Separately, Zynga has announced a partnership with American Express that allows cardholders to earn Zynga virtual game cash. [Tech]
- Monday 9:54 AM Facebook (FB -13.2%) tumbles in early trading to $33.20; even after the selloff, the company trades at nearly 23x sales and 75x trailing EPS. Not helping is BTIG's decision to launch coverage at Neutral; in-line with earlier comments, the firm is worried about Facebook's valuation, decelerating growth, and ad monetization issues. Also lower: RENN -8.3%. ZNGA -7.1%. YELP -6.8%. LNKD -6.1%. GRPN -4.8%. SVVC -7.4%. GSVC -10%. [Tech, On the Move]
